Outdoor Holiday Lighting Done Properly

Landscape lighting is rarely more fun than during the Holiday season. However, it can also be dangerous, especially if you leave it for last minute when ice, snow, and gusty winds create an unbearable atmosphere on the roof.

Here are a few tips for decorating safely and wisely:

Save Energy – Use LEDs

Due to the lighting decorations and heat, the Holiday season is known for high energy bills. Using LED lights and decorations instead of incandescent lights can save you up to 80% on lighting. They use less energy, are also safer, and are much less likely to blow a fuse or start a fire.

Ladder Safety

Although we strongly suggest you hire a professional, if you must go up on a ladder, use these tips:

  1. Keep your ladder at a safe 75 degree angle.
  2. Ensure that your ladder is on a dry surface.
  3. Be sure that you are not alone. Have a responsible adult spot you at the bottom of the ladder.
  4. Always have your two feet and at least one hand on the ladder. One can lose balance within a matter of seconds, so don’t take both hands off the ladder if you can help it.
  5. Look where you’re going to avoid power lines, icicles, and more.

Avoid Wet Areas

It may seem obvious to not leave a plug near an area that may get wet. Many of us don’t think about it as the area may be dry right now. It is important to consider whether an area can get wet in the future and if so, to not use a plug there. Furthermore, cover all exposed plugs with electrical tape.
